Community Harvest is a program that utilizes a web app to put would-be food waste on the plates of hungry people in our community. It connects three critical groups together in a single app; food donors, non-profit recipients and drivers. We are creating a marketplace where restaurants will want to offer meaningful donations (for tax write-offs) that non-profits will be eager to pickup by way of a network of drivers (with routing and verification tools).
The app will verify donations, produce necessary tax reporting, allow non-profits to filter through donations for easier planning, calculate optimal pickup routes for drivers and much more!
Committed partnerships already include top non-profit associations in GR such as Mel Trotter & Guiding Light Ministries.
The concept of food rescue is already becoming popular in large metropolitan cities like Boston, Atlanta and New York, but most lack the systematic approach supporting both the business and the non profit that we will offer.
1 in 8 of our neighbors struggle with food insecurity and nearly 10k people are estimated to be homeless in Kent County at any given time (veterans, families, single parents). This program efficiently connects the agencies serving these needs with the necessary food resources they need to be successful.
Community Harvest will chip away at the 133 Billion Pounds of food wasted every year globally, and work to systematically end hunger issues in Grand Rapids.
What I Will Do With $5,000
The $5,000 will be invested primarily in web app development to ensure optimal user experience and app efficiencies.
