This idea brings yoga tools to those that need it most. Statistics show that over 1 in 4 children living in poverty will experience a traumatic event before the age of 16. The number of traumatic experiences in childhood is the second most powerful predictor of academic failure.
We are different because we have created a sustainable model of impact. The children and teens that learn these tools will learn how to share what they have learned with others in the community, and the teachers that become trained in our research-based curriculum will have these tools to use for the rest of their careers.
Our yoga teachers are highly experienced educators with years of experience in the education field; this fact alone removes many of the barriers to success. One roadblock is participation issues that may be present for students and educators. We have worked diligently this year to get around this roadblock by building relationships with the students and teachers in the schools we serve.
Over 5,100 children, teens, and educators in the Grand Rapids community will benefit from this project in year one. In addition, our entire community will benefit because we are working to remove barriers to at-risk youth becoming healthy, productive members of our communities. School communities will become more positive and productive places, therefore benefiting all involved in the school.
What I Will Do With $5,000
This $5,000 will help our project expand, improve through research and consulting, and spread our mission throughout the community. The award will allow for us to bring a total of 36 yoga classes to over 40 students in Grand Rapids. We will also be able to bring the Yoga Ed. curriculum to over 20 teachers, which will reach over 500 students. The award will also fund research and consulting to improve our current program model, and marketing to communicate our mission to the community.
