This product is born out of purpose.  We are changing access to exercise!

I was the Director of a nationally award-winning center dedicated to the lifestyles (physical, social, intellectual and spiritual) of those 50 - 104 years of age! During a huge renovation, every detail of this project was to create affordable and inspiring wellness choices for older adults who experience daily ageism, marginalization and confront low expectations in their quest to grow bolder and with health!

All was going well with this massive undertaking . . .  until it came to our fitness studio.  Shockingly, we could not find a simple, affordable chair designed for seated exercise.

Frustratingly, older adults, those with limited mobility, those beginning exercise, and/or those in rehabilitation were relegated to office chairs, banquets chairs, or any other chair NOT appropriate or safe for exercise!

There was nothing appropriate in the market.  We created a solution.

Impact

We are blazing a trail to roll-out innovative exercise chairs that fill a much-needed void in the fitness market. It fuels the conversation on ageist and physically challenged design concepts, conscious or unconscious, in services and products - particularly tailored for those 50+.

Focus groups and in-kind prototype development confirm that good design inspires movement, decreases health risks, decreases isolation and creates positive behavior change.

The real deal is changing lives.

What I Will Do With $5,000

This award will allow for promotion of the chair to senior centers, senior housing, fitness studios, and rehabilitation centers, the development of video instruction for seat-based exercise (yoga, tai chi, stretch and tone, resistance bands), provide contributing funds required for Business Accelerator Grant project with the GVSU Medical Device Design class who has selected to further chair development that can meet the needs of stroke, rehabilitation, and more weight-bearing client demands.
