We are a cooperative marketplace for high-quality, self-published books. From our website, indie work will be offered to consumers as part of a “Buy-One, Give-One” model to foster childhood literacy. When a copy of a book is sold, a portion of the earnings will buy a book for a child in need AND fund literacy initiatives in low-income communities (through strategic partnerships with two nationally recognized nonprofits).
The market for self-published writing is thriving. Amazon alone sells 450,000 “indie” books per day. Working with the Michigan Small Business Development Center (SBDC), we’ve developed a critical path to capture a portion of this market. Beyond the charitable aspect of our model, we’re providing indie authors with a vital element Amazon, iTunes and B&N doesn’t offer – marketing. Indie authors lack the budget and/or insight to promote their work. Our company will be THE collection of indie books, THE central voice. We will be THE advocate for indie authors.
Our model benefits both indie authors AND children living in low-income households. An ebook will sell on our site for $5.99ea. With each copy sold, $2 will go to charity, $2 will go to the author, $1.99 will go to our company.
For the charitable portion ($2) - $1 will go to our nonprofit partner to provide a hard copy book. Additionally, $1 will go to another nonprofit partner to combat illiteracy.
Working with the SBDC, we’re targeting 3% of the Amazon “indie” market.

What I Will Do With $5,000
We will allocate the grant according to the critical path developed with the SBDC.
a) $1000 - Intern to contact and execute agreements with our author-partners. We’re targeting 250 authors prior to our May 2019 launch
b) $4000 - to work with a Grand Rapids marketing firm to develop a brand strategy, logo, website template, and a more memorable “DBA” name than Coalition of Indie Authors for Literacy.
