The Twinkle is a smart light focused on portability, privacy, and flexibility for managing a family routine with young children. You set the light to change any color you want on a per day and time basis. In addition to color, you can also choose a behavior, such as blink, pulse, solid, etc. In our house, red means bed and green means go. Blue means screen time. Blinking red means “warning: almost bed time”. You can choose whatever works well for you and your children.
Our light uses state of the art technology to keep your families routines private by using a web-based interface that avoids the cloud. My husband developed this when our daughter was a little over a year old and waking up at 5:30am. She was old enough to recognize colors, but not old enough to tell time. Now we use advanced scheduling to help our 5 and 7 year olds understand everything from daily routines to “what time is swim class on Friday?” It’s portability allows us to maintain routines during travel.
Short-term, parents benefit the most. Routines help parents ease transition times with their children, such as bed time or nap time. They also benefit by minimizing early morning wake-ups, as children 14 months and older can know when it is time to get up on their own.
Long-term, kids benefit from having a defined routines. Routines provide them with stability. A steady routine provides them with confidence, as they can “figure it out themselves”.
What I Will Do With $5,000
We plan to use $300 of the grant money to increase inventory. The remaining money will be used to expand marketing via targeted social media advertising. We have a lead that this concept would benefit parents of children on the autism spectrum. Individuals with autism often struggle with concrete routines and repetitive questioning. A Twinkle could assist by allowing communication without conflict. We wish to explore this possibility through partnership with behavioral health specialists.
