Motown Square will provide 70 residential units of affordable housing, 10 commercial retail spaces and 1 community center for its residents. Growing up as a child in this neighborhood and living on this very street as an adult, gives me all the excitement in the world to provide affordable housing opportunities to those who wish to remain here in the community. Yes, there are affordable housing projects being built all over Grand Rapids. However, these projects are usually built by large organizations. I have been on the other side of the fence and can relate to the disadvantages; slum lords, over priced rent, affordable rent with inadequate living conditions and more.
Will there be road blocks? Will there be doors that somewhat open and then suddenly close? Of course, thats what I’ve experienced while planning this project for the past 7 years. Strengthening my development experience by partnering has been a huge challenge. Though recent conversations, things are looking up.
Communities without affordable housing quickly become segregated by income and family background. Motown Square will promote economic and social diversity in the community to provide for the needs of all families. This neighborhood has been highly impacted by sellers and users of drugs. My dream is to lease out a portion of retail space to a staffing agency such as “Man Power”. Thus providing those living in the neighorborhood easy access to jobs and creating a brighter future.
What I Will Do With $5,000
Over the past 5 years, I have obtained 90% of the properties needed in order to fully build the planned dimensions of this project. This $5000 would help me purchase a vacant lot adjacent to the properties already owned by Motown Square. If there were to be any funds remaining after the purchase, I would use it to configure a professional website that gives the community and potential investors information about the affordable housing project at Motown Square.
