As an artist, I love going to spaces where I can stretch out and use equipment that is usually only provided by either a larger art center or university. There are local places offering workshops, but I believe Grand Rapids would benefit greatly by being home to a fully equipped art center where working artists, novices, kids and families can all find something for them, including (but not limited to) casual workshops, long term skills-based classes, and studio and equipment rental.

Our initial road block is the start up costs for equipment and supplies. This 5k will be an incredible stepping stone towards building our inventory so we can house a fully equipped darkroom and film processing lab, screen printing lab, natural dye kitchen, floor looms, a computer lab, and more. We want to ensure sustainable growth so Open Studios will be here for years to come.

Impact

We want to be the place where everyone feels welcome and can pursue their creative potential. Folks who want to grow their creative practice and/or learn a new skill will benefit greatly from the resources Open Studios will offer. We will strive to be a resource for working artists as well as a place where families can host birthday parties and kids can attend summer and after school camps. Down the road we would like to be a destination for teaching artists as well as an art residency.

What I Will Do With $5,000

The 5k will be used for launching our website, purchasing some of our start up equipment, and pursuing resources so that we can obtain funding to get Open Studios off the ground.
