Stir It Up is a one-of-a kind startup bakery dedicated to producing and selling high-quality goods created by the talents of the special needs young adults in our community. Stir It Up is designed to provide a safe atmosphere where individuals can obtain skills, increase their confidence, and gain a sense of accountability and pride. Our goal is to provide a work environment where they can showcase their abilities, skills, and talents all while creating delicious cookies. As a for-profit social enterprise, our goal is to take the charity out of special needs and show people that individuals with special needs are capable of holding jobs.
The vast majority of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed, despite their ability, desire, and willingness to hold a job. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, regularly reports the percentage of working age individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the labor force is about one-third that of individuals with no disability. And, for those who are employed, they face significant gaps in compensation.
What I Will Do With $5,000
During the months of May and June, Stir It Up sold cookies at the West Michigan Miracle League in Rockford, MI. These cookies were produced in a home kitchen under the Michigan Food Cottage Law. The $5,000 will go towards expanding our business into a rented commercial kitchen and obtaining our food license. This will allow us to grow our business by taking orders and producing on a more regular basis.
