About this idea
Most startup advice and content published is built for founders chasing unicorns or it’s based on one person’s experience rather than real data. The Quarter is different. The Quarter is built for founders growing from $0 to $250k who want to skip the fundraising game and just build a great business. Our content and resources are grounded in aggregated data from real founders, not just the perspective of one successful founder who thinks their way is the only way. The centerpiece is The Revenue-First Report: real data from real founders on how they actually got to $250k in annual revenue. I have 70 founders in the dataset now. With this grant, I want to expand that to 100+ interviews, turning it into the most honest, data-driven playbook for early-stage revenue generation that exists. Those findings, combined with feedback from founders in our weekly meetups, will shape cohort-based courses and a paid community built to incubate founders from $0 to $250k, wherever they are in the world.
Impact
A revenue-first business isn’t a lottery ticket. The odds of building a sustainable $250k business are far better than the odds of hitting a unicorn exit, yet most of the attention and encouragement in the startup world goes to the latter. The impact of The Quarter is felt at every level. For each founder, it’s a clearer path to real revenue and a sustainable business. For their family, it’s better economic prospects and a generational asset. For their community, it’s the kind of unique, locally-rooted business that makes a place more vibrant for decades. I’d rather help build a thousand sustainable businesses than chase one unicorn.
What I'll do with $5,000
The $5,000 will go entirely toward expanding and launching The Revenue-First Report. $3,000 will fund in-person founder interviews across multiple cities, producing the primary research and content that powers the report. In-person interviews produce richer data and stronger relationships, and getting to 100+ founders requires showing up where they are. $1,000 will fund sponsorships of creator newsletters serving similar audiences, getting the report in front of the right founders at launch. $500 will go to a designer to produce a polished, shareable report. The data is only as impactful as our ability to get people to actually read it. And $500 will go toward a local launch event in Grand Rapids, celebrating the report and building momentum in our own backyard.
