About this idea
Opportunity Cost is a story centered around Liam, a 20 year old, American soccer player from a low income household. He grew up with a small world view–his Michigan neighborhood consisting of only white, blue collar families. But everything changes when a Mexican family moves in down the street. After a lousy dribbling mistake, Liam ends up lodging his soccer ball under the minivan of the Gonzalez family. It's here that he first meets Jimena, the daughter of the house, a 19 year old, new-to-english soccer fanatic. The interaction ends awkwardly, but it's only the beginning. Later that day, they happen to run into each other again at the local grocery store. Jimena's mother invites him over to dinner. Unable to find a reasonable excuse, Liam's attraction to Jimena causes him to say yes. That night, Liam undergoes a life changing experience: his walls of preconception begin to crumble as he soaks in the similarities and the beautiful connection of the Gonzalez family. After a night of witnessing the joy he's always desired, Liam returns home, attempting to hide where he's been. But it doesn't matter–his jealous, disgruntled older brother is on to him. Liam, knowing the power his brother has an ICE agent, has to take matters into his own hands.
Impact
The impact of this film is going to be huge. All you need to understand is the current state of the US to realize why it's going to be impactful. With record levels of violence, distrust, and fear surrounding immigration, it's time to put the topic under a microscope. As a white American man, I feel uniquely positioned to tell this story. Why? Because I've lived it. Like Liam, I grew up with a smaller world view. It wasn't until I got into my late teenage years that I started to have these life changing experiences of witnessing the beauty of other cultures. And THIS, is what I believe the world needs–more time spent getting to know people different then them. This film will do just that.
What I'll do with $5,000
There are many things that this $5,000 would be used for. As previously stated, our goal budget is $30,000. But that number is broken down into many essential categories, such as: cast, crew, locations, food, equipment, post production, festival circuit + more!
