We are a Latina-owned food business planning to bring handcrafted churros, inspired by our family roots in Michoacán, Mexico. Each churro is made fresh using an original recipe passed down from our father. Our dough provides a neutral base with a subtle hint of salt making it the perfect foundation for our sweet, fragrant cinnamon-sugar coating. Each churro is dusted generously, with the perfect balance of sugary sweetness and spice. We’ll offer a variety of flavors that transport you straight to Mexico: the classic taste of cajeta or lechera, and the smooth richness of chocolate. Once fried, the dough forms to a golden crunchy exterior with a soft and warm interior creating an addictive texture. What makes Corazón & Canela unique isn’t just the churros - it’s the experience. We want to bring people together at community markets and events, creating moments to gather, share, and celebrate culture through food. While many dessert businesses focus on mainstream treats, our authentic Mexican churros are made fresh for every customer. We’re filling that gap with not only flavor, but heart, tradition, and a piece of our family’s story.
Impact
For us it isn’t just about churros, it’s about sharing our Mexican heritage and creating community. We’d offer Latinos a familiar taste of home and introduce others to the warmth of our family’s culture. As a Latina and sister-owned business, we will build a foundation for women entrepreneurs, showing that a small business rooted in tradition can thrive. As we grow, we hope to participate in spaces like the Fulton St Market or the Godwin Mercado. As well as festivals like the Hispanic festival or Return to the River festival. We would also love to collaborate with organizations that uplift the Latino community, ensuring that our success strengthens the very community we serve.
What I'll do with $5,000
Our goal is to establish a professional-grade churro cart for farmers markets, community events, and festivals. With the resources from this grant, we will: Secure Licensing, Training, and LLC Registration – Ensuring Corazón & Canela operates safely, legally, and sustainably is a top priority. Establish Appropriate Working Conditions – Renting space at a local incubator kitchen will allow us to stay connected with other food entrepreneurs and reinvest resources back into our community. Purchase Initial Inventory & Raw Materials – This includes the ingredients to produce our churros as well as items needed for our mobile setup, such as portable accommodations, a suitable work surface, signage, and food-safe storage containers. Acquire a Point of Sale System – We will establish a simple and efficient system to manage sales and inventory. Create Branded Packaging, Signage, and Socials – We will design culturally inspired labels and visuals for recognizable packaging, and invest in a domain and hosting for our website. Host a Launch Event – We plan to introduce Corazón & Canela to the community, generate publicity, attract media attention, and engage potential customers. This $5,000 investment provides traction by allowing us to become an operational vendor at farmers markets and local events. It helps us reach our target audience, generate sales, and build brand recognition. By investing in licensing, training, and a community incubator kitchen, we are laying a strong foundation for growth, collaboration, and cultural representation. With these steps, Corazón & Canela will be positioned to grow revenue and establish lasting community partnerships.
