About this idea
The idea is to promote and sell my self-published keepsake book, On the Day You Graduate, during graduation season when families are actively searching for meaningful gifts for graduates. This unique, interactive book is designed for students of all ages—from those graduating preschool to high school—and there is currently nothing quite like it on the market. On the Day You Graduate takes readers on a heartfelt journey from birth to graduation, reflecting on the growth, confidence, and strength a child develops along the way. The story highlights the love, protection, and nurturing that guide a child while also encouraging them to explore and experience the world around them. The book culminates in a celebration of graduation where the student becomes part of the story by sharing their own reflections, hopes, and dreams for the future. Additional pages allow family and friends to write words of wisdom, encouragement, and memories, transforming the book into a personalized keepsake that can be treasured for years to come. While the book celebrates graduation, it is also designed to grow with a child and can be used for kids of all ages. Parents can give the book to their child’s teacher each year and ask them to write a short note about the student—capturing milestones, personality traits, and encouragement along the way. By the time the student graduates, the book becomes a powerful collection of memories, reflections, and support from the many people who helped shape their journey. Because of this unique interactive feature, On the Day You Graduate can be marketed year-round to families with children ages 0–18, making it both a graduation gift and a lifelong keepsake that grows alongside the student.
Impact
On the Day You Graduate has the potential to create a meaningful and lasting impact for both students and the people who support them throughout their lives. By documenting reflections, encouragement, and memories over time, the book becomes much more than a gift—it becomes a record of a child’s journey, growth, and the community that helped shape them. One of the most powerful benefits of the book is the opportunity for students to see the positive influence they have had on others. When teachers, family members, and mentors write notes of encouragement and observations about the student each year, it helps reinforce confidence, self-worth, and a sense of belonging. By the time the student graduates, they have a collection of personal messages that highlight their strengths, accomplishments, and character. The book also encourages meaningful connections between students, families, and educators. Inviting teachers to contribute a note each year fosters reflection on the student’s progress and provides a thoughtful way for educators to leave a lasting impression beyond the classroom. For families, it becomes a cherished keepsake that captures moments and memories that might otherwise be forgotten. Ultimately, On the Day You Graduate celebrates the journey of growing up. It reminds students that their path has been supported by many people who believe in them, while also encouraging them to reflect on their hopes and dreams for the future. The result is a deeply personal keepsake that inspires confidence, gratitude, and pride as students step into the next chapter of their lives.
What I'll do with $5,000
If awarded the $5,000 grant, the funds will be used to strategically market and promote On the Day You Graduate in order to expand awareness and increase sales during graduation season and throughout the year. A portion of the funding will support digital marketing efforts across key platforms such as Amazon, Etsy, and Meta (Facebook and Instagram). These platforms will allow us to reach parents, families, and gift buyers who are actively searching for meaningful graduation gifts. In addition to digital marketing, we plan to introduce the book to graduating senior classes as a potential fundraiser for senior class celebrations. This approach allows schools to offer a unique keepsake for graduates while also raising funds to support their graduation events and activities. To support this effort, we will research and connect with high schools throughout the Midwest and beyond. Outreach will include identifying large graduating classes, contacting school administrators or senior class advisors, and providing information on how the book can serve as both a memorable gift and a fundraising opportunity for their class. These combined marketing and outreach efforts will help build awareness of the book, increase sales, and create partnerships with schools while providing families and students with a meaningful keepsake that celebrates the journey to graduation.
