About this idea
It's no secret that the agriculture problem is multi-faceted in the US. Millions of local farms struggle from wasting perfectly good produce simply because they can't sell it quickly, even with the help of farmers markets, websites, and on-site stores. Consumers, on the other hand, struggle to find inexpensive, locally-grown, nutritious food because they lead busy lives or live in food deserts. With Krishi, both farmers and consumers will never have to face these problems again. Essentially, Krishi serves as a digital farmers market where consumers and local farmers can interact directly with each other. After a farm sets up their profile and updates their inventory on the app, consumers can view nearby farms and create an order including products from multiple farms. Once the order is submitted, the farms are notified of what they need to prepare for the order to be completed. Afterwards, once the order is prepared, delivery drivers who are signed up through the app can 'claim' an order, view all of the information, pick the items up from the farms that are involved, and drop them off at the consumer's door. Then, the consumer has the opportunity to leave a review for the farm and the delivery driver.
Impact
Long after the COVID-19 pandemic, local farms continue to struggle to sell their produce before they perish. In fact, of the 120 billion pounds of food the US wastes every year, 16% comes straight from the farm. From the consumer's perspective, everyday people lead busy lives so they don't have the time to go to farmers markets or local farms often. They are forced to settle for options that are less healthy and produced by large-scale farms. Thankfully, Krishi alleviates all of these concerns for both. Farmers are presented with a more effective, streamlined avenue to sell their produce quickly, resulting in a reduction of food waste and more profit for local farms. Meanwhile, consumers are able to easily buy healthier, locally-grown food without having to take time out of their day to travel to a farm or farmers market. All they have to do is click a few buttons on the app, and the produce will arrive straight to their door.
What I'll do with $5,000
$5000 would help me build the infrastructure needed to expand my pilot to the real world. This grant would be used to improve Krishi's functionality that provides farmers with advanced data analytics, allowing them to track popular products, peak sales periods, and customer demographics. The grant would also help improve the app's marketing to get more farms and consumers alike to join the platform.
