About this idea
Crank & Create is a unique mobile pop-up workshop that brings the joy of knitting to local venues, partnering with brick-and-mortar businesses to host fun, social events. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced knitter, our workshops make it easy to create hats and other crafts using circular knitting machines—no prior experience required! Attendees leave with handmade items, and a portion of our profits goes toward making hats for those in need. We’re also renovating a studio for future workshops in Shelby Michigan, creating a permanent space to inspire creativity, build connections, and support local businesses. My passion for crafting and teaching makes me the right person to lead Crank & Create. I ran a DIY painting studio in Indiana, where I taught hundreds of workshops on everything from creating beautiful signs to refurbishing furniture. But knitting? I tried countless times, got frustrated, and ultimately gave up, convinced it was a skill I just didn’t have. I discovered circular knitting machines from a random TikTok video in 2022. I shared my knitting journey online and quickly built a global community of over 1.5 million “Cranknitters.” This journey, fueled by my own frustrations with traditional knitting, taught me how crafting can change lives, build community, and make creativity accessible to everyone. With plans to expand Crank & Create nationwide, similar to the success of wine-and-canvas events, I envision licensing this concept, allowing others to combine creativity, connection, and social impact across the U.S. Through Crank & Create, we’re not just teaching a skill—we’re building a community, fostering creativity, and creating lasting memories through fiber, friends, and fun.
Impact
Crank & Create workshops offer a whole new level of creativity, connection, and community. These unique crafting sessions offer more than just a creative outlet—they’re a form of therapy, helping to improve mood, reduce stress, and bring balance to our hectic lives. Imagine setting aside time to relax, recharge, and tap into the power of crafting while forming meaningful connections, both with fellow participants and the businesses hosting these workshops. But this initiative goes beyond personal benefits. I've donated hundreds of hats to those in need in my local area, and with every workshop, a portion of the profits will go toward purchasing supplies to continue that mission. Attendees will be contributing to something bigger—helping to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most. This is just the beginning. Once the local mobile pop-up model is established, we’ll expand nationwide, offering business opportunities to others, multiplying the impact across communities and transforming lives across the U.S. The impact is large, Fiber, Friends and Fun!
What I'll do with $5,000
The funding will be allocated strategically to scale the business and maximize its impact. Currently, I have six circular knitting machines, but to fully launch and sustain growth, I require an additional six larger machines and twelve smaller ones. These machines are essential for expanding the capacity of the workshops, enabling me to accommodate more participants and diversify offerings. While not immediately critical, acquiring mid-sized machines would further enhance the variety of workshops I can offer, allowing for even greater flexibility in programming. In addition to the machines, I’ll need specialized tension guides and other necessary supplies to ensure the workshops run smoothly and efficiently. With these resources, I can significantly increase the size of the workshops, which will, in turn, drive profitability and support the business’s continued growth. This will also allow me to build a booking website and fund a comprehensive marketing and advertising campaign to reach a wider audience. Moreover, I plan to use a portion of the funds to file for a trademark, a crucial step as I prepare for future licensing opportunities. Should there be any additional funding, it will be invested in developing a brick-and-mortar studio and expanding into complementary craft offerings, further solidifying the business’s foundation and long-term success.
