About this idea
At I Love Pig, we sell Venezuelan arepas and Cuban sandwiches, but the real star is Mom’s sauce: a creamy garlic and cilantro mayo made from a family recipe that has been passed down through generations. We serve it with every arepa and sandwich, portioned into 2-ounce containers. Currently, we fill each one by hand in small plastic cups, which poses a big challenge: the process is slow, lacks consistency in portion size, and creates non-recyclable waste, negatively impacting the environment. Our idea is to acquire a machine that allows us to package the sauce more efficiently and precisely, using kraft paper wrappers—a biodegradable material that is more eco-friendly. This new packaging will not only reduce environmental impact and save production time, but also carry our branding, enabling us to distribute the sauce to other local businesses and open a new revenue stream. This expansion would create more jobs in our community and carry the flavor and heart of I Love Pig even further.
Impact
Our impact is human, cultural, and environmental. On a human level, we create jobs for Latina women, many of whom face language barriers or have limited access to job opportunities. I Love Pig provides a safe space for them to grow, learn, and contribute. Culturally, we share a little piece of Venezuela (and Cuba too) with every dish. We help preserve our traditions and connect cultures through flavor. And now, we want to expand our environmental impact: by switching from plastic containers to biodegradable wrappers, we’ll reduce the waste we generate each week. Automating this process will also allow us to grow, distribute our sauce to more locations, and create even more jobs in our community. Our impact is about slowly transforming a family-run business into a true agent of positive change.
What I'll do with $5,000
With $5,000, we want to transform the way we package our signature Mom’s sauce. We would use $4,000 to purchase a machine that automates the portioning and packaging process, allowing us to improve efficiency, save time, and reduce manual labor. The remaining funds would go toward the initial purchase of kraft paper rolls—a biodegradable material that will replace our current plastic containers—and the cost of shipping the machine to our location. This change will make our process more sustainable and professional, while also allowing us to customize the packaging with the I Love Pig logo. It will open the door to distributing our sauce to other local businesses, creating a new source of revenue, greater visibility, and more jobs for Latina women in our community. This investment is a real opportunity to grow, care for the planet, and strengthen the heart of our business: the people who make it all possible.
