About this idea
We have secured 12x30 plot of land in Norton Shores Michigan, fondly called “ Soul Filled Gardens”. This plot will be used as “dirt therapy” for both veterans & youth, to grow greens, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, beans, onions and sweet potatoes. Said items, once harvested will be distributed at the local farmers market throughout vending season. •In addition to the veteran and at-risk community working together, every Saturday from 9am-11am at the Muskegon Farmers Market culinary instructional classes will be led by Chef Lakisha, teaching participants how to use the fresh farm picked items in the recipes, canning and meal preparations
Impact
This project has been design to empower the community and provide fresh produce to its residents. We realize that giving our children fresh produce helps them perform better in the classroom, fight childhood obesity, and obtain a skill set that will help them learn the necessary skills to interact with others despite the odds set against them.
What I'll do with $5,000
$800 will be used to invest in pest control contract and lawn maintenance of “Soul Filled Gardens” •$1500 - will be used to cover cost of supplies, signage, gardening equipment and food service utensils •$1100 – to obtain mobile vendors license for one yr from Muskegon County Health Department •$550- will be used to cover cost of monthly insurance premium, ServSafe certification and employee training events $1050 - will be used to pay TNT Graphics of Muskegon, in full to wrap vehicle with appropriate to market “Turkey Knuckle Trolley” concept
